Engelberg

Let's continue our trip to Switzerland. You know Switzerland... clocks, banks, chocolate? Don't you think I've forgotten something?... That's right! The mountains! So I'll make it up today by telling you about Mount Titlis, situated near Engelberg.

How do you get there? The closest larger city is Lucerne and, from there, you can either go by car to Stans and then to Engelberg, or you can take the direct train to Engelberg ( leaves every hour from Lucerne railway station ).

Engelberg railway station

If you visit Engelberg during winter, then you'll probably be tempted to ski for a bit as well. There are 82 km of slopes and ski tracks, so I'll just name a few : Brunn, Gerschnialp, Trübsee, Jochpass, Titlis.
But let's not forget why we are here.
Getting to Titlis will take some time and that's because Engelberg is situated at an altitude of 1015m and Titlis at ... 3238m! You have to take the cable car on the following route : Engelberg - Gerschnialp ( 1262m ) - Trübsee ( 1800m ), then Trübsee - Stand ( 2428m ) and then Stand - Klein Titlis ( 3028m ). The trip lasts about 45 minutes, so you'll have to be careful with the timing. The schedule varies during summer and winter  and it depends on the weather as well.
The cable car between Stand and Klein Titlis is round and it's the world's first revolving cable car. All you have to do is just stand on the revolving platform in the middle of the cable car and enjoy the view.

It sounds great, doesn't it? There are some other interesting things to say about Titlis, but I want to warn you before you decide to visit it: the return trip to Titlis costs 86 CHF. I know it is somewhat expensive, but you can receive a discount in one of the following situations :

  • 10% if you stay in Engelberg and you have received the Guest Card Engelberg from your hotel or you have filled the form from your host and then asked for the card at the Tourist Center
  • 20% for groups of more than 10 people ; if you are less than 10, maybe you can make some new friends there... more than 10 I mean
  • 50% for children aged 6-15 or if you bought any of the following : Swiss Pass, Swiss Card, Eurail Pass, Interrail Pass or SBB ( Swiss Railways ) 1/2 Fare Price/General-Abo

In case you take the train from Lucerne, I'm advising you not to ignore the booklet that accompanies the ticket. That's because they have many discounts inside for different attractions nearby and they might include some offers for Titlis as well. If you don't receive the booklet from the cashiers, you can look it up in the ticket shop. It's for free.
You can find more details on the transport from Engelberg to Titlis here and more details on prices here.
And now let's go to the top!

And here we are! I must tell you that during summer, the difference in temperature between Engelberg and Titlis can be 14C so you should dress properly. One thing is for sure : there's snow on Titlis even in the middle of June. You will have to walk for the last part of the trip, from Klein Titlis to Titlis for about 300m.
What else can you do once you have reached the peak? You can try the chairlift Ice Flyer or the Fun Lift ( a 150m snow tube ).

If you're afraid to walk through snow in your summer shoes, you can take pictures on the sun terrace or visit the Glacier Cave ( for free ) or just eat at the restaurant at Klein Titlis and enjoy the view.

In the glacier cave...brrrrrrr!
And, just in case you want to send a postcard to your beloved ones before descending...

...I would recommand you to postpone it until you get to Engelberg again. Apparently the high altitude air makes some people confused and I'm not sure if the receiver would like a perfumed postcard.
I hope that I made you interested in visiting Titlis and Engelberg and take your own pictures there. If you're still undecided, you can admire more pictures from there at  http://www.pictures-switzerland.com/titlis/index.htm.
